November Science Experiment

When was the last time you witnessed your child’s eyes widen with amazement by a science experiment? At Trillium Montessori, we believe that memorable moments of wonder are the force that drives lifelong learning. And that’s why science experiments, like the recent “Balloon Hovercraft Science Experiment” that took place in November, are crucial to our Montessori STEAM integrated curriculum.

As any one of our deeply committed educators would tell you, when children engage with hands-on, observational learning activities, they aren’t just understanding scientific principles. They’re also nurturing their sense of curiosity, problem-solving skills, and, more importantly, their independence.

During the Balloon Hovercraft Science Experiment, children got to explore the fascinating world of air pressure and friction.

The children began the experiment by attaching a plastic bottle cap with a small hole securely to the center of a smooth CD. Once they accomplished this using strong tape, they filled a balloon with air and secured its neck to prevent the air from escaping. With a little help from our supportive teachers, each child then stretched the balloon’s opening over the bottle cap, ensuring a snug fit without releasing the air. The real magic happened when the kids untwisted the balloon on a smooth surface. As the air escaped, it created a cushion that allowed the hovercraft to glide effortlessly across the table—the children’s expressions of awe were truly priceless.

The Balloon Hovercraft Science Experiment provided an opportunity for Trillium’s young learners to grasp the concept of how air pressure can reduce friction. This simple, yet fascinating exercise demonstrated the effects and principles of physics at play, fostering a deeper understanding through firsthand experience rather than mere theory. Moreover, aligning with the Montessori method, it encouraged self-directed activity, enhancing motor skills for our young learners.
