
At Trillium Montessori, we love creating hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and wonder! This week, our young scientists explored the concept of density through a fascinating activity that involved common household liquids like honey, corn syrup, colored water, oil, and dish soap. The result? A vibrant density column that captured their imaginations!
Here’s what we did:
Using clear containers, we carefully poured each liquid one at a time to create a layered rainbow. Each liquid settled into its own unique layer, creating a stunning visual effect. The children observed how the liquids didn’t mix and noticed how some layers were heavier and stayed at the bottom while others floated on top.
What We Learned:
This activity was beautiful, and it taught the children about density, a key scientific principle. They discovered that different liquids have different weights and that’s why the layers formed. As they explored, we discussed how density affects things we see in the natural world, like oil spills or water and air interactions.
